Nanuli is 82 and lives alone on Nikea Street. Her son is in Batumi and calls once a week. On Thursdays Levan comes by: he stops at the pharmacy, they drink tea and talk for two hours. This is not nursing. It is simply that Thursday is no longer an empty day.
Public School No. 5 has one English teacher for four classes. On Tuesdays at 15:00 six children stay in the library and Keti speaks only English with them — no grammar, just films, the sea, cats. After three months one of them answered a tourist at the port for the first time.
In November the harvest has to come in within a week or it rots. On a Saturday morning three volunteers came up to Guranda's orchard: two students from Poti and a German who was in town for three weeks. By midday they had picked forty crates, swapped numbers and came back in spring.
